Kauai Golf

Sunday, July 31, 2005

I haven't played golf for over 3 weeks now, trying to let a sprained hand heal in time for a trip to Kauai tomorrow! We'll be staying on the south end of the island in Poipu where I plan to play Poipu Bay Golf Course - one of the best 18 courses in the U.S. according to Golf Magazine and home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf! I hope my hand will cooperate.

I'll miss playing SLO Golf while I'm away, but Kauai should be good backup ;)

Introducing Arron Oberholser

Saturday, July 30, 2005

PGA Tour player Arron Oberholser was born and raised in San Luis Obispo, CA. and now lives in San Mateo, CA.

Arron is currently 54th on the 2005 PGA Tour Money List with $880,296 and has played in (19) events and made (12) cuts. Arron finished 38th on the money list for 2004 with total winnings of $1,355,433.

Last year, Arron followed his rookie season with a solid sophomore campaign, making over $1.3 million and posting a career-high three top-10s, including runner-up finish at the Wachovia Championship. He made 17 cuts in 23 TOUR starts. Arron shared the third-round lead with eventual winner Vijay Singh at the AT&T Pebble Beach
National Pro-Am after opening with three rounds in the 60s. Final-round 76 left him T4. Had a one-stroke lead heading into the final round at the Wachovia Championship. A closing 72 put him into a playoff where he lost to Joey Sindelar. Oberholser made his first start in a major championship tournament at the PGA Championship in Whistling Straits, WI, finishing T13.

The highlight of Arron's young career was collecting a $1 million first prize for his victory in the Shinhan Korea Golf Championship in late November - the first official PGA Tour event in Asia. The 29-year-old carded a 3-under 69 for a four-round total of a 4-under 284. [Read article here]

Arron began his rookie campaign in 2003 by making eight consecutive cuts including his only two top-10s. Earned 64 percent ($396,869) of his season's earnings during the stretch. In seventh career PGA TOUR start (fourth as a TOUR member), posted first top-10 of career with a T4 at the Buick Invitational. He held the
first-round lead after opening with a 7-under-par 65 on the North Course at Torrey Pines.

Prior to his PGA debut, Arron finished second on the Nationwide Tour money list in 2002 with $319,883. He led the money list for seven of the final eight weeks of the season until Patrick Moore's victory at the TOUR Championship. Posted first of two victories at the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship. Final-round 5-under-par 66 propelled him to a tournament record 16-under par 268, more than enough to move the former Canadian Tour member to his first career win. His second victory came at the rain-shortened Utah Classic. Shot a final-round 5-under-par 67 on Sunday after tournament had been shortened to 54 holes earlier that morning. Recorded three eagles in the second round on his way to an 8-under 64, only player on Nationwide Tour to accomplish feat in 2002. [Interview w/ Arron after Nationwide Tour]

In 1999, Arron was named Ericsson Canadian Tour International Rookie of the Year after winning twice. Set Canadian Tour record for largest margin of victory (11 strokes) during his win at the Ontario Open.

Introducing Loren Roberts

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

PGA Tour player Loren Roberts was born and raised in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Loren played high school golf at San Luis Obispo High School and worked as an Assistant Professional at the Morro Bay Golf Course in Morro Bay, Ca. He attended college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he was later inducted into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame in 1998.

Loren Roberts made his Champions Tour debut last week with a 1-over 72 at Royal Aberdeen to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Senior British Open. Roberts, who turned 50 on June 24, overcame some uncharacteristic three-putts and the strong North Sea wind that blew across the course and kept anyone from breaking par. Roberts stole the show from Greg Norman, another 50-year-old in his senior debut. Norman, coming off a tie for 60th last week in the British Open at St. Andrews, struggled in the wind and shot 76. Roberts ended up finishing 4th in his first Senior British Open.

Loren is currently 85th on the 2005 PGA Tour Money List with $592,330 and has played in (14) events and made (9) cuts. Loren finished 78th on the money list in 2004 with $998,677, placing him in the top 100 for the 17th consecutive season.

A memorable moment from his career was the 1999 GTE Byron Nelson Classic. After failing to finish in the top 30 on the money list in 1998 for the first time since 1993, Loren returned with a solid year. A third-round 62 matching career-low produced a 54-hole lead at the GTE Byron Nelson Classic and a tournament-record 16-under-par 194. He finished tied with Steve Pate with tournament record 18-under-par 262. Loren won the playoff with a par on first extra hole. His father, who spent 1998 looking after his Alzheimer's stricken wife, was in attendance for first time in nearly a year. He joined Loren when Byron Nelson presented Loren with the championship trophy.

In 1994, Loren won The Nestle Invitational with closing 67 to defeat Fuzzy Zoeller, Vijay Singh and Nick Price by one stroke. That year he had three top-10s in major tournaments: T5 Masters, T2 U.S Open and T9 PGA Championship. Tied with Ernie Els after 18-hole playoff at U.S. Open, but lost on 20th hole.

SLO County Golf Trail Brochure

Friday, July 22, 2005

The San Luis Obispo County Visitors & Conference Bureau (SLOCVCB) announced the creation of a all-new countywide golf brochure just over a year ago - "Golf Trail - San Luis Obispo County, California." The colorful tri-fold brochure includes detailed descriptions of eleven county golf courses, along with spectacular photos and a countywide map with complete contact information.

The SLOCVCB's executive director, Jonni Biaggini, formed a "Golf Advisory Board" with local golf course representatives to promote the area in and outside of the county as a major golf destination. The board drafted a marketing plan and the creation of the full-color brochure is the first accomplishment. "In this highly competitive world of golf, our golf course managers are realizing that strength is in numbers," Biaggini said. "By collaborating, instead of competing with each other, we can promote San Luis Obispo County as a major golf destination."

The local golf courses view the newly formed board and promotional efforts as extremely beneficial to the golf industry. Gary Setting, Chairman of the Golf Advisory Board and owner of Sea Pines Golf Resort in Los Osos, said, "I’m thrilled to see all of the golf course operators unite and discuss options to promote golf in our county as a whole." He emphasizes that the brochure will serve a dual purpose, "We want to establish the county as a top golf destination for visitors and continue to promote great, quality golf to local golfers as well."

The first printing was for 100,000 copies. They will be distributed in Certified Folder brochure racks throughout the county at hotels, restaurants, golf resorts, visitor centers, chambers, airports, campgrounds/RV Parks, gas stations, car rental offices, wineries, and Amtrak Stations. They will also be distributed in Northern California at over two hundred major corporate businesses located in San Jose and Santa Clara.

In addition to the release of the brochure, the SLOCVCB has upgraded their website to showcase golf as a popular attraction. "Golf Trail" has been added to the home page tab listings, along with a map of the local courses and chart of amenities. A separate website address was created, www.SLOCountyGolfTrail.com, that directs people to the SLOCVCB website.

The SLOCVCB will be sending out a golf brochure with every Visitors Guide that is ordered. The brochure can also be ordered by visiting www.SanLuisObispoCounty.com or by calling (800) 634-1414.

Cypress Ridge Golf "Resort"

Wednesday, July 20, 2005

The San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission approved plans last week to turn Cypress Ridge Golf Course into a resort destination with 81 lodging units for visitors and a new clubhouse that includes a 200-seat restaurant and 3,400 square feet of conference rooms.

Additional plans have already been approved to add a spa and gymnasium with three pools and four tennis courts to the upscale 379-home development and golf course on Halcyon Road near Highway 1 and Arroyo Grande's southern edge.

The county approved the original plans for the Cypress Ridge development in 1996. Changes in zoning to allow for "The Lodge at Cypress Ridge" were approved in 2002.

"We've done a market analysis and it indicated there was a strong need for this type of space in the community," said developer Denis Sullivan. "There are few places you can go in the county that have a golf course and also have lodging facilities, and that's what the community needs."

Sullivan said he hopes to begin building all the new resort facilities by next summer.

SLO Junior Golf

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

San Luis Obispo County golf courses are working hard to develop junior golf on the Central Coast, introducing the great game of golf to our local youth. These local courses break down the cost barrier for a youth getting started by offering inexpensive and even free beginning golf instruction programs.

Avila Beach and Blacklake Golf Resorts introduce beginning youth to golf through "The First Tee" program - a program that provides easy access for any child to experience the game of golf, no matter what their life situation.

Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero has an extensive Junior Golf Program, offering Free Golf for beginners. Local professional, Roger Tambellini, got his start at Chalk Mountain!

SLO JR Golf Summer Camps include professional golf instruction and skills challenges in on course play, rules, etiquette, putting, pitching, chipping, full swing. These camps are held at the Sea Pines Golf Resort, Hunter Ranch Golf Course or Cypress Ridge Golf Course, and Dairy Creek Golf Course.

For junior golfers who seek to grow in the game, there is plenty of competitive opportunity. For example, the San Luis Obispo County Junior Golf Association offers tournaments for players seeking tournament experience and thinking about playing golf in high school.

Junior golfers interested in competing with top juniors from California and neighboring states can register with the California Junior Tour - California's Premier Fall-Winter Junior Golf Tour offering twenty 36-hole weekend junior golf tournaments throughout California, from September 2005 through April 2006, open to boys and girls ages 11-18, not yet graduated from high school.

On the national level, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America are active participants in the effort to promote junior golf as well.

In addition to the national and state golf associations, there are numerous junior tours offered throughout the country for those who are willing to travel.

FLO Golf in SLO County

Sunday, July 10, 2005

The Golf industry overall continues to struggle since September, 2001. Many factors are involved in the decline such as current oversupply of golf facilities, high cost of fuel, higher housing costs and changing recreation patterns of our society. At the same time, golf courses face higher operating expenses, most apparent with fuel and fertilizer costs. This past winter's excessive rains further reduced golf rounds and course revenue here in SLO County.

Let's face it, the industry's good fortune that resulted from the emergence of Tiger Woods and the industy's subsequent struggles due to oversupply and rising costs are nothing the individual golf course can control. Nevertheless, many of our local courses are finding creative ways to get more golfers out to the course such as offering Free Beginning and Youth Lessons at Chalk Mountain Golf Course and The First Tee Program and Infinite Golf discount membership at Avila Beach and Blacklake Golf Resorts to name but a few.

These efforts are worthy and hopefully fruitful, but I'd like to see more of their creative thinking targeted at their existing base of golfers, finding ways to make their experience more enjoyable, perhaps more affordable, and maybe even more frequent.

An idea I think many golfers would appreciate is making efforts to reduce slow play. Since I often head out to the course by myself and join up with other twosomes or threesomes, I get to talk with a wide variety of golfers. The most common complaint I hear from these golfers is not about high costs, but about having to wait to take every shot because of backed up play. Most golfers maintain a good attitude about waiting since they just assume its now a permanent part of the game.

Perhaps an effort by SLO County courses to reintroduce the element of "flow" to the game will result in increased participation.

Instead, many courses deploy a number of marshalls and require use of carts on weekends in an effort to keep play moving. However, I don't think slow or walking golfers contribute to slow play nearly as much as the inefficient loading of the golf course does. As courses embrace short tee time intervals to maximize rounds per day and revenue, they inevitably force the course to backup. When the course is overloaded, the natural flow of the game can only be experienced in intervals and only when everyone on the course consistently hits their balls on or near the fairway and flys around in carts.

Earlier this year, Ray Festa from Morro Bay Golf Course pointed out to the County Golf Course Advisory Committee that the tee time intervals at Morro Bay Golf Course are the same as when the golf course was having 100,000 rounds per year. Since the golf course is currently getting 65,000 rounds annually, it might be time to modify the starting times, increasing to longer intervals and not overloading the golf course off the first tee. This alone might improve pace of play and contribute to better enjoyment of a golf round. I understand that a trial program was started at Morro Bay to increase the tee time intervals and see what the customers have to say.

Communications will be very important as courses increase tee time intervals. The golf starters will need to be trained to hold back players until their designated tee time and players will need to be informed on why they are being held back.

Golfers will reap the reward of playing a wait-free round of golf and rediscover its natural flow.

As a result of this effort, SLO County could become a preferred golf destination by marketing its unique "FLO" Golf.

"Experience the FLO in SLO... San Luis Obispo County - Golf without the wait!"

Featuring Chalk Mountain Golf Course

Thursday, July 07, 2005

After signing on Avila Beach and Blacklake Golf Course yesterday, today we met with the General Manager and Head Professional at Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero to discuss promotional ideas for their North County course. In addition to agreeing to feature their Tournaments, "Free Junior Golf Lessons", and "Play Free Golf on your Birthday" offer, we'll also be launching a website makeover for their existing website at www.chalkmountaingolf.com! Here's what their site looked like before...

We're excited to launch this new website which includes the site's current content along with additional information about their pro shop and affiliation with Golf Shop 101, along with clinics, lessons and pro bios. Here's what the new design looks like...

After meeting with their staff, I practiced a little on their chipping and putting greens, then headed out for a round of 18 holes. It was pretty hot out there today with only a small breeze for relief. I was a little concerned about my hand spain in my right hand, but it's been feeling okay when I'm not playing. My concern turned out to be warranted. I was in quite a bit of pain on the back nine. However, the front nine went well. I had 3 birdie putt attempts from 3-4 feet, but only sunk one of them. I turned in a 39 on the front, hitting 5 greens in regulation.

I've now shot under 40 on the front nine in my last 3 outings, but haven't yet broken 40 on the back nine. Today was no exception. I can blame my hand injury and the heat for part of this lack of success, but overall, I just didn't play as well. I shot a 45 on the back nine to finish with an 84. I only hit 3 greens on the back nine in regulation.

Anyway, it's looking like I'll need to take some time off from golf to let this hand heal. I'm not happy about it, but want to be injury free for an upcoming week vacation in Kauai with the family in August. I'm planning to get out for a round or two with my son... Looking forward to it!

No better game than Golf

Friday, July 01, 2005

The Cincinnati Enquirer shares an article on why they believe there's no better game than 'gowf'. The article includes many popular golf quotes and 15 (or so) reasons golf is the greatest game in the history of games.

"One game fits all. You can play when you're 5 and when you're 85. You can be 240-pound Jason Gore and play in the final twosome on Sunday at the U.S. Open. Or you can be 140-pound Jesper Parnevik, who's so skinny he hangs himself up in the closet every night. Name another sport where you can improve after age 50. Name anything in life like that."
